With the growth of Blackberry apps development, Blackberry was successful in winning a major share in the smart phone market. It was Blackberry which initiated the smart phone era. However, the company has recently signed a tentative agreement to be purchased by Fairfax Financial in a $4.7 billion deal. Fairfax Financial is a Canadian holding company. This once successful technology company played an important role in the mobile device revolution. However, it failed to keep up with the Joneses.

Blackberry failed to keep up with technological changes adopted by Google and Apple. It failed to recognize the importance of consumers and continued emphasizing on business customers. The other mistake that Blackberry made was it winked at the apps revolution on which iPhone and Android banked their success. Last but not the least, Blackberry failed to recognize that smart phones would no longer be used just for communication but would soon serve as a replacement for a PC. The launch of Blackberry 10 in early 2013 came as a breather for the company but couldn’t stop Mike Lazaridis, the Blackberry Founder, to depart from the company. The acquisition of Blackberry by Fairfax Financial will make it a private holding.
Blackberry is now taking steps to absorb the losses it has faced with the layoff of more than 4,000 employees. With Fairfax Financial gaining the ownership of the company, Blackberry supporters are seeing a ray of hope in this dark and dwindling time of Blackberry. It is to be seen in the coming days whether Blackberry continues to be the smart phone once preferred by one and all in the business world or evolves to be a device beyond its present capabilities.
Fusion Informatics is a mobile development company that offers Blackberry apps development services to businesses across the globe.
